(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

"Too bad he's sick. What ails him that his daughter has to take over running the place?"
Hamvang tugs the ear flaps of his hat and scratches his scraggly beard. "Clyde took a fall into the Maer Dualdon (lake) last winter... feels like a lifetime ago... poor man's lungs have never been the same since. Can't carry a firkin without an awful coughing fit."

GM: If you're catching up on posts, I described the Eastside inn and inhabitants back in post 932.

You're looking for the cold-hearted killer who you believe to be Sephek Kaltro, a man in the employment of Torrga, a dwarf who operates a traveling black market on dogsleds.

You also have an unopened duergar treasure chest, and a bunch of yeti pelts for trade.

OOC: does the fur hood of the orc match the hair we found? I imagined what we found is more like a beard than fur but I thought I’d ask. Also, are there any spells that would help the inn keeper? Like lesser restoration?
GM: The wiry white hair you found in the snow does not match the half-orc's fur hood.

You won't know without someone trained in Medicine performing an exam - or just trying to cast it - but if the innkeeper Clyde is suffering pneumonia, for example, then lesser restoration could cure that.

"I have a talent for the healing arts. Maybe I can attend to him and see if I might be able to help him somehow. For now, I'd better rent a room. I'll ask his daughter. It was good meeting you, Hamvang."

He walks up to the young girl,

"Could I rent a room, please?"

I'm not trying to monopolize the scene here. Just kind of waiting for you folks to pipe in and decide what our next move is to move the scene forward.

While it may not seem like the sabotage is related, there is a dwarf who is helping the killer and it could be some of his beard that we found. But I'm willing to follow you guys to where you want to go next.

The freckled teen has been singing softly to herself as she takes notes in the accounting ledger...

"Ahead of winter's wind she came—
The lovely woman with no name;
Draped in a fur-lined cloak of red,
To the icy lake she fled;
The wind pursued her all the same—

As sure as night she's dead."

"Oh, a room. Yes, do you need a...a..."
Marta Peskryk, a dark-haired teen of no more than 14 winters with eyes too weary for her age, glances up from the ledger at Oskar. As her gaze trails beyond him to your motley company – the human Zeth, the half-elf Alma, the gnome Logrim, the deep gnome Lumrolur, the goblin Aric, the spry fairy Jack, and the pert-eared haregon Russet – she stammers for a moment.

"A room for yourself? 8 silver pieces... or is it for all of your... are you adventurers?"

GM: Whenever you encounter a song/poem/riddle, I put a link to it the first post of this thread under "Table of Contents & Songs/Poems/Riddles" fyi.

Zeth & Russet's players have retired from the game, but their characters are still with your party... for the time being.

The dwarf looks back at the others who offered to be his companions through the mines.

"Yes, a room for each."

He counts 5 gold and hands it over. A room was the least he could do to repay their kindness.

"It looks like you've been busy, keep the change." He pauses for a moment and, as he watches the poor girl count the money, his heart breaks for her,

You know, we have some business to attend to today but I hear your da is sick, young lady. Maybe while folks get their rooms and get settled in, I can spare some time see him before we head out. I am a cleric of Sharindlar - that's a goddess of healing, if you don't know - and, while I'm not sure if there's anything I could do, I might be able to recommend a remedy."

I had 18 gold and now have 13. Oskar is trained in Medicine.

Lumrolur slips outside going from the point Oscar already checked and going a bit outward and up looking for signs that professional infiltrator would leave (very little), but that maybe an engineer wouldn't think to look for. Specifically, maybe the tool is still close by, just set against the beam above normal line of sight. Most civilized people don't look up because there is nothing from above that can kill them. Jungles, and caves, are dangerous in three dimensions so he looks around the place, checking the space up to first floor.

OOC: Investigation +2, Perception +6, Survival +4; looking around: Athletics -2, Acrobatics +5, Insight to "get into saboteurs head" +4
