D&D (2024) Multiclassing and ability score drain?

I've never really seen people do Searing Smite over divine smite, partially because half the damage comes on their turn. Like the Green Flame Blade damage, it is situational .... usually if the BBEG is right after you it will work and if he is not right after you it won't work nearly as often.
It's at the start of their turn. It's not like they got a chance to do anything. I didn't include multiple rounds.

Also, it was crap in 2014, and it's less damage at spell level 1 and 2 (assuming 1 round).
I just finished a game with a 20th level 8 Warlock/10 Arcane Trickster/1 Paladin/1 Bard. The Paladin spells I used were Wrathful Smite and Divine Smite (but I was also playing with a 22 Charisma and an 8 Intelligence at games end).
Which doesn't have 5th level slots.

Their warlock 4th level slots would deal a little more, and the Trickster would deal less. Average is probably about the same, and it's not worth getting both.

The thing is though that is the guy your allies are going to attack and hurt and if you are going nova on him there is a good chance he is not going to survive until his turn.

It is more damage, but half of it is situational.
I mean, kinda.

If they have less than 48.5 HP they die either smite.
If they have more than 58 then divine wouldn't kill them, but searing might.

IMO, that's a narrow window for when divine smite works better.
