D&D 1E Old module question.

Yup. Another option is carousing for XP (numerous versions on various OSR blogs over the past 15-odd years), and of course the original expectation was that PCs were going to be spending a bunch on expert Specialists who cost lots of cash every month (X21), Mercenaries (X22) for domain play, and a bunch of it would eventually be going to build a castle or other stronghold at name level (X52)

Yup. This is part of why Old School Essentials Advanced Edition is so popular. It takes all those extra spells and monsters and magic items B/X is missing and tastefully re-writes/edits them into the B/X format. Of course you can always do that work yourself pretty easily, too. For my taste a lot of the AD&D spell descriptions get a little fiddly and excessive, but I've imported them and cut them down as needed.

OSE advanced 2E hack would be sweet for me.

Spheres and specialty priests
Yeah, I could see it. Especially given how absurdly broken (some underpowered, some superpowered) a lot of 2E specialty priests were, having Necrotic Gnome or someone equally good re-write those with the same care they took with OSE Advanced classes has some appeal.

Seems like a nice idea for the third party DrivethruRPG product.

Not to mention all those henchmen and men at arms it was assumed you'd bring with you, lol. I remember seeing rules for XP for carousing somewhere, lol. Made me laugh! If my one fighter could have earned XP for all the bar brawls he used to get in... (not a dick or anything- he just loved to fight for the fun of it! And having a Drow, a half ogre, and a gully dwarf in the party meant excuses were frequently on offer.)

I'll have to look harder at those. I just skimmed through OSE Advanced, looking at the expanded class list. Didn't really look at spells. Wasn't thinking of actually playing it NOW, at the time, lol. Then I got this module, and it looked so wild, I HAD to try it!

You’re subverting AD&D’s intent by crossing out all that loot. The loot was (part of) how you level up.

🤷🏾 Luckily, subversion of AD&D's (often opaque) intent is the only way I know how to make that game work. Also, those modules are about 60% of what I still used in 3E and now 5E (with Dungeon Magazine adventures making up about 35% of the remainder).

I LIKED having actual loot. WOTC D&D wants you poor and destitute, for no discernable reason. I was mostly flabbergasted because to listen to my old DM, PC's need to be po', po', po. - just like old school. Then I started reading through those old adventures- and WOW! Real treasure!!!

BTW, that same DM used to hand gold and items out by the bucketload, so I don't know WHAT he's getting on about, lol. It's like he believes we're all 1st Edition Monks- sworn to a vow of poverty.

I ran one yesterday. 200k in loot level 7ish.
