Gnome bards are something that gets kicked to the curb in my game. Gnomes are and always will be the illusionists.
At first, I didn't like the flat bonus of the stat boosting spells because I thought the +4 was too generous, but it makes sense with the math. A +4 increase is always a +2 bonus to the stat's related rolls. But when it's 1d4+1, it affects even and odd numbered stats differently. If the stat is even, a roll of 2 or 3 provides a +1 bonus to the stat and 4 or 5 a +2 bonus. But if the stat is odd, then a 2 is a +1 bonus, a 3 or 4 is a +2 bonus, and a 5 is a +3 bonus. Thus the variable roll benefits an odd numbered stat more than an even numbered one. So it comes down to whether or not one prefers a consistent boost, or a slight benefit to having an odd numbered stat.
I prefer how 3.0 handled opposition schools over 3.5's method. The schools aren't equal, and some are clearly worth more than others.
