D&D 2E [2e] Monster Mythology Update Project

Vecna Reborn from 2e Ravenloft does not add a lot mechanically, the clerical Vecna cultists in the adventure are just evil clerics. Other cultists are fighters and thieves.

The Late 2e Greyhawk Players guide has very little on Vecna as an imprisoned Demigod of Greyhawk

"Imprisoned gods: Tharizdun, Vatun and Vecna are imprisoned. Their priests get up to 2nd-level spells only."

An interesting sidebar to the part about Vecna's worshipers (outside of Ravenloft) not being able to receive spells above 2nd level (which contradicts, if I recall correctly, a line in Domains of Dread), is that Die Vecna Die! introduces a magic item called "knucklebones of channeling," which allow Vecna's worshipers to receive higher-level spells. It's not given a sidebar or anything like that, but instead turns up in the stat blocks of various NPCs in the first part of the adventure.

Maanzecorian the Philosoflayer always fascinated me, as a knowledge- and philosphy-loving deity of a very evil race. He always felt like the perfect patron of Estriss, the illithid in the Cloakmaster Spelljammer novel series. I was disappointed when he was unceremoniously slain in the Dead Gods adventure, so I took this opportunity to create the potential of a revival (or, for those who wish it, another deity to masquerade as him).

The last of the elven deities published in Dragon #155 and updated in Dragon #236 is Melira Taralen the Songstress, goddess of musical creation and musicians. Dragon #236 also described Melira as patron to elven minstrels (the kit from PHBR07 Complete Bard’s Handbook) and half-elven bards, which gave me an opportunity to create a sect of her belief that holds her as a true half-elven deity.

I'm curious as to how you think The Songstress's church and the Harpers and Oghma's church would vibe in the Forgotten Realms.

I'm about to set up a campaign in the Unapproachable East, and given that Aglarond is often viewed as a truly half-elven nation, or at least the most half-elven nation in Faerun, that seems like a good place to have this church break out and become a major faith.

There would likely be good relations between Melira's church and the Harpers; many of her followers who travel about to gain news and determine how other lands are treating elves and such could easily also be Harpers.

Oghma's church would probably see half-elves as more "rightfully" human, so there would probably be a rivalry between the churches, with Oghmanites wanting to bring potential followers into the fold. Nothing hostile or anything, though. It's been a while since I read up on Aglarond, so I don't remember how strong the Seldarine's faith is there; I would expect a strong Seldarine faith to be necessary for an expansion of Melira's own faith because it is relatively small and in a lot of ways subordinate to Hanali's. Could be a ripe place for expansion, though.

The final elemental power is the enigmatic The Elder Elemental God, the Lord of All Matter. Imprisoned in times long past, it can still manifest to a degree on the Prime, which encourages its followers to try and feed it power and weaken its bonds still further in hopes of releasing it.

Interesting choices. I would have expected drow to be more predominant worshipers than humans given the Monster Mythology, Demihuman Deities, Menzoberranzan, and D series history even if the 3e syncretism with elemental evil and Tharizdun are incorporated.

The description says that duergar and drow are primary worshippers in the Underdark.

I am still surprised at humans outnumbering drow by more than two to one. I would expect it to be a primarily underdark cult.

"Of the races drawn to the Elder Elemental God’s service, humans make up the largest contingent (56%), with drow (20%) and duergar (14%) making up the most significant secondary groups of worshippers, with the remainder consisting of other dwarves (hill, mountain, and derro; 6%), other demihumans (non-drow elves, gnomes, and halflings; 2%), and humanoids and other various creatures (2%)."
