I don’t know…initially I thought the monk way overturned. But they will only block a few attacks a combat at low mid level. The need high scores to even be a monk (rare) and personally surviving is not the same as a party surviving.

If I stay on your feet alone, you may now run right into a random encounter. A quarter staff is 2 handed. If u have to carry a torch….yikes. Attack bonus only goes up to a 4. That staff can crank out a nice +2 damage on top of d6 at third…but your needed dex and wis and int mean you are unlikely to have a str bonus.

By 10th level with a required +1 to dex u should have a -1 AC? Assuming a fighter would be there too.

So on 3rd consideration I think they are quite good but not game breaking in a party survival game…cleric spells kick them up a bit too…but per the book balance is not a goal. It’s about surviving as a group really as long as u can.

Looking forward to playing!

Your reasoning looks solid to me!

And finally decided to grab a hardback myself despite already owning the PDF. My poor bookshelf...
My hardback arrived. Just so pleased…the pdf was sick but book is next level. I wanted to be frugal but for 20 bucks more than pdf alone, I folded. Love it

I hear you. I more or less just collect and read them. I enjoy the different takes on "what Gary should have done". That's why when one comes around that I actually want to play I get excited.
Sorry for the really late quote here. There are so many takes on how one wants to see OSR D&D. I think everyone has one. I have one, and every time I work on it, I change my mind. That and I have little to no interest in publishing a book. It's always interesting to see alternative takes on it all.

So compared to OSE, how would those who have played this rate Dragonslayer? It looks cool, and well laid out in reviews, but does it do anything different other than having a Monk class and maybe some other classes? It still B/X at heart right? The big thing that would stop me from running this is the standard magic system, as I'm looking for something with a bit more danger.
