Level Up (A5E) Sun Priest Cleric Optimization Recommendation

The Radiant Burst channel divinity feature for Sun Priest archetype is quite good. It is a reason for choosing Sun Priest over War Priest.

Are you planning to use a weapon, or a cantrip to do damage when not casting higher level spells?

A weapon will generally do more damage before level 5, as it gets your ability modifier to attack and damage. It's moot at level 5, as cantrips start to outstrip weapon damage at that point, unless you're boosting your weapon attack with a cantrip like Booming Blade or Green-Flame Blade from 5E D&D if your DM allows those.

Assuming you have Dexterity 14, you'll get +2 attack/damage with a finesse weapon. You'll have simple weapon proficiency, so your best options are heavy crossbow (1d10 two-handed) or sling (1d4 one-handed) for ranged attacks, or dagger (1d4) in melee.

On the other hand, if you went with Strength 16, you'll get +3 attack/damage, and can use a greatclub (d8 one-handed) in melee, with the same ranged options as above.

Alternatively, if you get the druidic Shillelagh cantrip somehow, then you can get your Wisdom modifier to attack/damage with your club.

Another possible option along similar lines for a cleric-like healer with heavy armor would be a Druid with the Steel Renegade archetype. Would work okay as a follower of the desert sun, but quite different from what you were planning. Just a random idea.

I was looking for Charisma-based healer options, but the next closest is Bard, and they're not in the same ballpark for healing, if that is your intended primary focus. Herald is another possible option, with significantly less spellcasting.

Not looking for a cha based healer. Just wanted to see about having a higher cha so I could be better face wise but the stat rolls are making it harder for stat spread and wear the armor I want.
are you planning on doing all your levels in cleric?
It also sounds like you plan on doing some melee front line fighting, is this correct?
Lastly is the character going to be good/heroic?

Would a Str 10 be okay. After talking a few of the other players most we have a brain character and a beat stick and both have said both are going to dump cha. So thinking about putting 15 in Cha and pull of a face abilities as well. Or would well Str 10 cause issues with wearing medium armor and using a shield
I'm not sure "beat stick" is accurate for the tabaxi. His goal is to quickly turn things into pincushions via short swords.
