I guess the 1E designers weren't considering the effect on journey rules when they came up with the original spell! We could have just missed it out, but we felt we should be as complete as possible.
That seems totally fair. I could understand it not giving supply. It's the haven part that I am struggling with. Thanks for the honesty :)

Tiny Hut says creatures can pass through it meaning PC's surely still have to take watch etc. so how could it be a haven? While MM can only be accessed by those designated by the caster and is safe so why isn't it? Neither make sense to me.
Agree with this. How is a Tiny Hut a haven when monsters can walk right in? I don't understand.

I like the concept of journey rules, but making them nigh-impervious to even high-level magical assistance does start to make the whole concept feel rather forced.

Gandalf had to light campfires with the best of them!

But more seriously -- if the journey rules just disappear after a certain level, it makes them very limited. D&D just isn't set up for it. Ether you change D&D or you don't have journey rules, unfortunately.

It's also about the environment scaling. If I were running the game and 20th level characters were journeying to the next village, I would handwave it. If they were on the 7th layer of the frigid abyss, I would use the journey rules. When doing the latter, I want the rules to support me. When doing the former, I don't need rules.
