Ernie Gygax Has Passed Away

Ernest "Ernie" Gygax Jr., son of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax and an early playtester of Dungeons & Dragons, has passed away. The Gygax family confirmed the news via Gary Con's website today. Cause of death was not given, but Gygax had been hospitalized several times in recent years. Gygax is best known for the creation of Tenser, the first magic-user character, and whose name appears on several D&D spells used in current editions. Per Ernest's bio, some of his contributions to the games include multiattacks for fighters, different hit dice for different character classes, and Cone of Cold being a 5th level spell.

Gygax often appeared at gaming conventions, especially Gary Con, and also collaborated on various TTRPG projects. He was involved with a failed attempt to "resurrect" TSR and take over several IPs controlled by Wizards of the Coast, but it failed after litigation and eventual liquidation of assets. During that process, Gygax alienated many with questionable views and also his choice in business associates.

Our condolences to the Gygax family and their friends.

I cannot imagine the pain of losing a brother.

I remember going to a seminar of his at the first virtual Gary Con; his love of gaming and his enthusiasm really shined.

Much like his father, he just wanted to game and make games for people and he was taken advantage of by those he called friend.

Al east, he did in fact get to game and game and game. One can only hope to do that in retirement (lol my gen and on will never get to retire)

In 2010, during one of the early Gary Cons, Ernie was kind enough to let me tag along over to his home where we and others talked quite a bit and played the San Juan card game. When Ernie found out I was a Fritz Leiber fan, he handed me a postcard Fritz has sent his mother Mary Gygax. I'm not one to "fanboy".... I mean, I was hanging with Ernie, and had met his Dad before he passed, but that post card....

Well, anyway, that's an example of how open and generous he was, at least to me. We gamed together a few more times over the years, and he was always kind and respectful to me, even if we disagreed, whenever we would chat.

RIP, Ernie. Your contribution to the game lives on.

I don't really follow gaming news or have too much leisure time for it these days; I found out about this when Troll Lord Games delayed a Kickstarter and I got the email. The landscape of the gaming industry has changed so much since CPL Petry taught me how to play in the Army. Ernie was my parents' age. This one really makes me feel old. And melancholy. RIP Ernie. Tenser sent me and my friends on so many adventures. Thanks for the memories.
