  • I wanted proficiency with all armor and shields.

  • I wanted the Fighting Style feature.

  • I wanted the Second Wind feature.

    Votes: 11 23.4%
  • Because of story reasons: I was a former soldier, or something.

  • My first character class was boring, and this helps.

  • ONE level? Sir, this is the first of several levels of Fighter.

  • Another reason not listed here (see my comment below)

  • I wouldn't multiclass with Fighter for any reason.

Judging by this poll and the comments, I could create a feat that would eliminate more than half of the reasons for "dipping" a level of Fighter.

Totally Not A Fighter (working title)
Prerequisites: Str 13+
You were going to multiclass with Fighter, but reconsidered your choices. You gain the following benefits:
  • proficiency with light armor, medium armor, and shields
  • proficiency with Constitution save throws
  • one Fighting Style from the list available to the Fighter class.

Is this too much for a feat, though? And it's missing heavy armor... a lot of those dips are wizards wanting plate mail (in my experience, anyway) and just dealing with the reduced movement (from low str) by having Phantom Steed, Longstrider etc. As folk said, the way to go for your wizard is to take their first level in fighter.

Man, I hate dips.

Oh it absolutely is too much. But look at the bright side: the player would take this slightly overpowered feat instead of dipping a single level of an otherwise ignored class. Depending on the player, I'd be willing to bite my tongue and allow it.

(And at my table, breastplate + shield is the 'holy grail' of wizard armor. Mostly because of how I handle Stealth.)

well,

armor proficiency feats are complete crap, I have not seen it taken once in 11 years of playing 5E
same with martial weapons feat,
Con save feat is OK and it is taken as alternative to fighter dip if you really do not want to miss on fullcaster levels
fighting style feat from Tasha is awful as a full feat and passable as half feat. I have not seen that taken also.
new feat with one?!?! weapon mastery is a joke also.

alternative totally not a fighter feat by @CleverNickName

1. proficiency in light armor+shields, proficiency in medium armor, proficiency in Heavy armor. you can replace one of those with skill proficiency

2. Martial weapons + 2 weapon masteries

3. fighting style + 1 weapon mastery

4. Proficiency in Con saves

you get 3 features from the list.

or only 2 features as background feat.

Yea, that's a solid feat. Taking that feat and leaving myself behind +2 on my main ability score, versus dipping and being one level behind in my main class features, is a tough call without an obvious answer. And that's exactly the space where the best mechanical choices should sit.

It's not too much. That's the intensity level a feat needs to be to challenge taking +2 ASI at levels 4 and 8.

Oh right, they made it "no more than 1 spell that uses a spell slot per turn," right? But does that mean that they could fireball + fireball wand?
Absolutely. Scrolls would be fine too, as no spell slot is used. Loophole or working as intended? The world may never know, lol.

EDIT: took a second look. "On your turn, you can take one additional action, except the Magic action."

If using a Wand uses the Magic action (I believe it does), then the answer is no, sorry.

I meant that it is a lot more powerful than other feats as-written. I don't really know how to judge how powerful feats should be.
I'm not going to claim to be an expert, but my general criteria is "hard choice." Most feats, especially ones that don't give an ASI, aren't worth taking until you get a 20 in your main stat. Low-level feats can be worth it to an individual depending on how their valuation of "using the feat to fulfill a character concept" versus "pure mechanical effectiveness" shakes out.

I haven't looked at 2024 feats much, but the only 2014 feats I generally considering taking at low-levels (outside of playing a VHuman) were some of the +1 ASI feats if I had an odd main stat (like Elven Accuracy and maybe Heavy Armor Master) and the GWM/Sharpshooter/Lucky feats.
