D&D (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

There's a new Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set, titled Heroes of the Borderlands, coming in September. WotC has given us a quick peek at what's inside! The set is designed to be replayable, and comes with maps and cards, which are presumably part of the tile-based character creation system WotC has hinted at recently. The video doesn't reveal much else, but we should have more information over the coming months.

Let them eat chits! It was good enough for us!

50 bucks is pretty comparable to a lot of board games nowadays. Does WOTC ever play the 'loss leader' card with their products?

When I was there, we never shipped a loss leader but we could go for a lower profit margin if it made sense. With the 2014 starter set, we wanted to remove character creation to make it pick up and play. That also meant we could make a good case for aiming at a lower profit margin, since players had a clear upgrade path to the $50 PHB.

BITD it came down to making a good case and showing the product line as a whole. I think we were able to show a healthy margin on the line as a whole, with the lower margin starter set boosting sales of the other products.

A few new details, including confirmation of multiple sets of dice and a higher price point.
This line is odd

While it says it will cost more than the pre-existing version that’s $29.99

The current MSRP for the most recent starter set is $19.99 and usually selling at $15.69 at Target (though now down to online only)

Heck of a price hike. A lot of people are IMO just going to see "new starter set $30 more than old starter set (or more than double)", and ignore the various reasons why that might be.

$50 for the core books feels almost like a loss leader. These books are huge, high quality, and were really expensive to produce I bet. Same price as the smaller ones from 2014.

Edit: the core books aren’t likely a loss leader but they certainly provide less of a profit margin with the $50 price tag than other books or products. $50 MSRP at a FLGS means $25 back to WOTC which has to cover the entire production of the book, art, physical production cost, shipping, and more.
