Really interesting to me that the very first thing they chose to emphasize in the undead video is how one of the most appealing things about undead in D&D is the clarity of “what your job is” as a player… They’re beating around the bush a little, but I feel like what they’re trying to get at is, “here’s a morally unambiguous enemy type that you can always know is ok to kill.” They also mentioned fiends in the same breath, so here’s my government-mandated grumbling about gnolls. But more to the point, I find it fascinating that they’re putting that front and center as a selling point of undead. I wonder if they’re trying to reassure folks who are unhappy about humanoid monsters no longer coming in always-evil.

That is a strong possibility, and a good thing IMO.

As to gnolls: I would personally prefer some sort of WFRP "beastman" chaos mutant rather than a specific "species" -- if only because it opens up a bunch of opportunities. Sure, hyenas that eat demon flesh turn into gnolls, but what about boars or tigers or even humans. There's a whole class of awesome enemies in there, kind of "blocked" by making gnolls THE demon humanoid type.

Oh, I've missed the Slaymate of the Month from Monsterboy. I'm a little surprised WotC was willing to go in that direction, but I'm not going to complain.
