D&D (2024) Multiclassing as feats:

would it be easier if multiclassing just takes your feat slots and you gain 1 or 2 levels of 2nd class every 4 levels by spending a feat.

feats:
Multiclass initiate: requires level 4+
+1 ASI
gain 1st level features of a chosen class with current multiclass rules

Multiclass adept: requires level 8+, multiclass initiate
+1 ASI
gain 2nd and 3rd level features of a chosen class

multiclass expert: requires level 12+, multiclass adept
+ 1 ASI
gain 4th and 5th level features of a chosen class, do NOT gain 4th level feat feature.

multiclass master: requires level 16+, multiclass expert
gain 6th and 7th level features of a chosen class

multiclass grandmaster: requires level 19+, multiclass master
gain 8th, 9th and 10th level features of a chosen class. any feats gained cannot have requirements higher than level 8.

This would be way OP IMO.

No feat is worth a class level and no two feats are worth three class levels.

Consider:
1. Weapon Master gives you +1 Strength or Dex and mastery in one weapon you are already proficient in.

2. Moderately Armored gives proficiency in medium armor and a +1 dex or strength has a prerequisite that you are already proficient in light armor

Compare to:

Paladin Initiate: you get a casting level, 2 prepared spells, proficiency in all martial weapons, proficiency in light, moderate armor and shields, lay on hands, two weapon masteries in any weapons and a +1 in any ability you want

Fighter Initiate: Light, medium armor and shields, martial weapons, 3 weapon masteries, second Wind, +1 in any ability you want.

Cleric initiate: Proficiency in all armor and all weapons, +1 in any ability, a caster level, 3 Cantrips, 4 prepared spells.

you have to take in calculation at what levels you get low level features of another class.

and feats that you mentioned are so bad that no one ever took them. at least in the games I played for last 11 years.

What happens if I take sneak attack?
Or spell casting?

I.e sorcerer taking bardic spell casting.

in dnd there are 2 problems:

1-2 level dips that give way more that they should.
Not in 2024. They spread things out much more. All subclasses are at level 3.
50-50 split of classes sucks beyond all measure.
Depends on the classes.
50/50 Range/Rogue work perfectly fine.
Or Moon Druid/Monk

Barbarian/Sorcerer, not so much.

This approach works better in PF2 (aka Featfinder) than it does in 5e.
Yeah, the real problem is that 5e has made feats SO precious and important, having to drop 5 of them just to get a little tiny bit of progress on another class is an extreme cost, especially because you're paying maximum stat boosts as well.

Which might be why 5e has a number of subclasses that allow one class to 'lean' into another class without picking up a level elsewhere.

Fighter (Eldritch Knight) leans into wizard.
Wizard (Bladesinger) leans into fighter.

This approach avoids the pushback in class features that one would normally get from multiclassing into another class. So, it's a bit of a plus.

5e could do what PF1 did by creating hybrid classes such as the PF1 Arcanist (Sorcerer/Wizard) or the PF1 Hunter (Druid/Ranger). But this is probably not going to officially happen. It's more up a 3pp's alley than WoTC's.

point is that feat is so precious.

you get extra class features for it, and while I stated that you do NOT get 4th level feat, if you are multiclassing into fighter, you would get 6th level bonus feat with 16th level multiclass master(fighter) feat, and you get 8th level feat slot with 19th level EPIC feat.

and this best works on fighter OFC, with 2 extra feats that the class gets, you can give your generic fighter a little more flavor.
