TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Because the Saga of TSR3 has been ongoing for a while, with many landmarks, I thought I'd do a quick timeline for those who haven't had the time (or, frankly, inclination) to keep up with the whole palaver.

As multiple entities refer to themselves as TSR, I will use the nomenclature (1), (2) etc. to distinguish them. However, all the companies below simply use the term "TSR".

The principle people involved with this story are Ernie Gygax (one of Gary Gygax's children), Justin LaNasa (a tattooist, weapon designer, and briefly a politician who refers to himself as Sir Justin LaNasa*), Stephen Dinehart (co-creator of Giantlands with James Ward), and -- later -- Michael K. Hovermale, TSR3's PR officer.

Also linked to TSR3 is the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Much of TSR3’s commercial business appears to be conducted via the museum.

  • Late June 2021. TSR3 embarks on an astonishing social media campaign where they tell people who don't like Gary Gygax not to play D&D, call a trans person on Twitter 'disgusting', thank the 'woke' because sales are up, insult Luke Gygax, and more. They also block or insult those who question them on Twitter.
  • Late June 2021. Various companies distance themselves from TSR3, including Gen Con, TSR2 (who rebrand themselves Solarian Games), GAMA, and various individuals such as Luke Gygax, Tim Kask, Jeff Dee, and more. TSR3 responds to being banned from Gen Con by claiming that they created the convention.

  • June 30th 2021. TSR3 blames the widespread pushback it is getting on WotC, accusing it of mounting a coordinated assault on them. In the same tweets they claim that they created the TTRPG business. Ernie Gygax and Stephen Dinehart then deactivate their Twitter accounts. Months later it transpires that this is the date they received a C&D from WotC regarding their use of their IP.

  • January 10th 2022. TSR3's Justin LaNasa sends TSR alumn Tim Kask a profane message, telling him to "Go suck Lukes/wotc/balls you f*****g coward" and accusing him of having been fired from TSR for stealing.
  • January 11th 2022. Michael K Hovermale claims that the first edition of TSR3's Star Frontiers: New Genesis game was released and has sold out. He says “It was a very small limited run released and sold on the DHSM [Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum] website. It is no longer available, and probably won’t be reprinted.” As yet, nobody has publicly revealed that they bought a copy.
  • January 14th 2022. Michael K. Hovermale resigns as TSR3's Chief Creative Officer and Public Relations Officer after 6 months in the position.
  • March 4th 2022. WotC strikes back with a lawsuit naming TSR, Justin LaNasa personally, and the Dungeon Hobby Shop museum. WotC seeks a judgement that TSR hand over all domains, take down all websites, pay treble damages and costs, hand over all stock and proceeds related to the trademarks, and more. TSR has 21 days to respond.

  • March 22nd 2022. TSR gets an extension on that WoTC suit. Two waivers of service of summons granted to both Justin LaNasa and the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum. He now has 60 days from March 4th to serve an answer or motion, or suffer default judgment.
  • March 26th 2022. TSR CON takes place at the same time as Gary Con. TSR claims " lol, actually we asked just about every one of the 800 people stopping by, TSR CON, and about 60% had no idea Gary con was going on, and we tried pushing them to go over and attend."
  • March 28th 2022. TSR3 posts images of 'rebound' copies of AD&D 1E books it is selling for $650 each.
  • May 17th 2022. Evidence emerges of Nazi connections via TSR3's Dave Johnson. Public Twitter posts include concentrated hateful imagery and messages over a long period of time.
  • May 17th 2022. DriveThruRPG removes all Dave Johnson Games titles from the platform.
  • May 17th 2022. A jury trial date is set for the TSR/WotC lawsuit for October 2023 (few suits like this actually make it to trial in the end).

  • July 19th 2022. A leaked version of a beta version of TSR's 'Star Frontiers: New Genesis' game emerges on the internet. The content includes racist and white-supremacist propaganda, including character races with ability caps based on ethnicity, and various homophobic and transphobic references. Justin LaNasa immediately threatened to sue blogger Eric Tenkar, who shared the information publicly ('Mario Real' is one of LaNasa's online pseudonyms). Various evidence points towards the document's genuine nature, including an accidentally revealed Google drive belonging to NuTSR.
  • July 22nd 2022. A video shows a Google Drive that appears to be owned by nuTSR, which contains a list of enemies of the company, usually with the word "WOKE" in caps being used as a pejorative.

  • August 30th 2022. Wizard Tower Games announces that they have received a subpeona from WotC regarding TSR and Justin LaNasa. Former NuTSR employee Michaal K Hovermale confirms that he has also received a subpeona.
  • September 5th 2022. Justin LaNasa sends out customer data, including addresses and credit card numbers. LaNasa responds by publicly claiming the evidence is photoshopped and slandering those who revealed it as liars.
  • September 8th 2022. WoTC files an injunction to prevent LaNasa or his companies from “publishing, distributing, or otherwise making available Star Frontiers New Genesis or any iteration of the game using the Marks”.
  • June 8th 2023. NuTSR files for bankruptcy. The case between WotC and NuTSR is postponed until March 2024.

Have I missed anything important? I'll continue updating this as I remember things, or as people remind me of things!

To the best of my knowledge, TSR3 is not actually selling any type of gaming product.

*if anybody has any link to LaNasa's knighthood, please let me know!

Websites
Various websites have come and gone. I'll try to make some sense of it here so you know what site you're actually visiting!
  • TSR.com is the original TSR website. For a long time it redirected to WotC. The URL is no longer in use. (WotC)
  • TSRgames.com was TSR2 until summer 2021. The site is still running, although TSR2 is now called Solarian Games. (Jayson Elliot)
  • TSR.games was TSR3 until summer 2021. It now goes to Wonderfiled(sic)'s website. (Stephen Dinehart)
  • TSR-hobbies.com is TSR 3.5, launched summer 2021 by Justin LaNasa and Ernie Gygax. (Justin LaNasa)

I don't really see how anyone can reasonably conclude there should be a x day memorandum on having a negative opinion on a dead person - you feel what you feel and to pretend otherwise is insincere. Lots of people weren't super comfortable with the Irish chanting "Lizzy's in a box!" when the Queen died, but it was a natural extension of their relationship with her and to pretend otherwise or ask them to wait a week would have been absurd. All policing negative sentiment to the dead does is help people who need Ernie to be a saint because he was "on their side" (or rather, cannot deny it now he's passed on). In this case, where there is various bits of misinformation floating about Ernie was essentially the architect of the response to his passing.
I am not sure that comparing him to the Queen is constructive.

This is a thread for discussing the nuTSR fiasco. Decorum in this situation requires allowing those who loved him space to grieve as they see fit. Posting in this thread isn't interrupting them and they can opt to avoid the thread, it's not driving people to post on tribute videos etc. There is no decorum that requires complete pause on the negative opinions of the deceased everywhere for unspecified amounts of time.

Garycon made a very nice tribute to Ernie on X/Twitter and I can't find a single negative statement regarding him there, nobody's saying a bad word about him in response. Luke's own post on the same platform has numerous expressions of condolences, and again, no bad words. Everyone is displaying decorum (except on Reddit and that's... well it's Reddit).

If that's not enough, then I suspect you consider who the new expansion of the concept of decorum now being a condition where specific type of people who were not respected in life now get this special treatment in death. As I said, at least some of the people who Ernie invited to his wedding, and one of the people who posted a big impassioned defence of Ernie, did not believe Jennell Jacquays deserved any respect.

Because that is doing what everyone is claiming nobody is doing - policing feelings, deciding that certain people are entitled to infinite forgiveness in life because of arbitrary traits while other people just have to keep suffering humiliation and insult in life for the benefit of these special dead. That's not decorum, that's just perpetuating oppression.

What is also an absolute breach of decorum, which I would think people who cared about Ernie and his family would actually care about, is people who never did anything to help him in life (or even exploited him), now being graverobbers and declaring themselves the guardians of his legacy (which they get to decide, and mysteriously benefits them) under weird pretenses. That sort of thing should be what makes your blood boil.

If that's not enough, then I suspect you consider who the new expansion of the concept of decorum now being a condition where specific type of people who were not respected in life now get this special treatment in death.
Mod Note:

Everyone, please- decorum is not to serve the dead, it’s to serve the living. That’s his family & friends, to be sure, but also includes the ENWorld community, where civility is one of the site’s core values.

As mentioned when I posted the admonishment of the other poster, Ernie’s missteps in the nuTSR saga have been pretty well catalogued and discussed in this very thread. It’s literally old news. Bringing them up here & now adds nothing to the discussion of current events regarding nuTSR. But for his recent demise, we probably wouldn’t be discussing him or his errors in this thread again.

Hell- the fact of his death doesn’t even have more than tangential value to to this ongoing discussion.

So let’s cut the threadcrapping.

Hence why I think there should be a lock if there's going to be a requirement on waiting to talk about him. It's not easy to keep decorum when discussing someone who advanced the idea that you should not exist. Even if it wasn't as direct as his friends, he was still posting stuff up to this last week of that nature.

Like... there is someone actively in this thread who was part of the same company, defending Ernie. Someone who was there for all the nazi stuff, same as Ernie. I don't mind waiting a while for heads to clear and families to grieve before dumping more on the guy, but I really mind someone who happily worked for the racism factory being allowed in here while the people this company would happily victimize are kicked out because of "decorum."
That's why I posted the link I did. Dan was there for the Star Frontiers stuff personally, and directly speaks to Ernies lack of knowledge and involvement with the project. He says Ernie had zero awareness or opportunity to be aware of what was in it and what was happening, and Dan is the one who called WOTC on the project and stopped it in its tracks, quit when he saw the racism stuff, and news leaked out before Ernie knew or could have known. Connecting Ernie to that appears to be just blatantly false.

That's not defending Ernie in general, but it's specific to an incident that was claimed in this thread. If you recklessly directly accuse someone who just died of direct involvement in racist material when you knew or, with any amount of care and attention to the matter should have known, that they were not directly involved with that racist material, that looks defamatory to me. It looks malicious, particularly when you wait to do it until the person just died and cannot defend themselves.

The only project I am aware of which Ernie took any personal credit for isn't being mentioned in this thread so far, and that is Marmoreal Tomb which wasn't a NuTSR project. While Benoist did most of the work on that project, Ernie did also work on that project directly, and edited and reviewed the project, and his name is directly on it. And I have heard zero controversies regarding that project other than how late it was.. And the lateness was very serious, but nothing of the nature of the stuff being discussed in this thread.

Right. When I next get to my desk, I will be warning and ejecting everybody from the thread who ignored my instructions to stop litigating the Ernie Gygax topic, or who decided to start discussing moderation in-thread, with no exceptions. I guess you really did think I was joking. If you suddenly find yourself unable to post in the thread, you know why.

If you choose to keep the guy who worked for the bigot company in the thread but not the queer people Ernie was attacking as recently as this last week, then that speaks more about you than anyone you'd be warning. If you want to protect nazis more than you want to protect the queer people on this site, then as a queer member of the site... bye I guess? I wouldn't want to post somewhere that actively protects nazis anyway.

Calm down. A man has passed, a complicated man with flaws and strengths.

Of all the fan sites on interwebs, the moderation here at ENWorld is the best there is. I am not a fan of Ernie Gygax, also don't have the energy to hate him, and fully support the mods asking us reasonable things like chilling out on this and allowing his family to grieve.

EDIT: Removed some unhelpful bits. Sorry.

Goodbye.

Those who continued to litigate Ernie Gygax--on either side of the subject--after the instruction to drop the subject have been removed from the thread. Those who attacked staff members have been removed from the site, as per our zero tolerance policy. Let's all take a breath, and give the family some time to grieve, at least until they've had chance to say goodbye properly. I don't know the family's plans, but I'm sure we'll hear soon enough, and I hope people can wait until after the funeral. After that, the moratorium is lifted. Until then, please try to be kind. Well, always try to be kind, but in particular regarding this topic.
