TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Because the Saga of TSR3 has been ongoing for a while, with many landmarks, I thought I'd do a quick timeline for those who haven't had the time (or, frankly, inclination) to keep up with the whole palaver.

As multiple entities refer to themselves as TSR, I will use the nomenclature (1), (2) etc. to distinguish them. However, all the companies below simply use the term "TSR".

The principle people involved with this story are Ernie Gygax (one of Gary Gygax's children), Justin LaNasa (a tattooist, weapon designer, and briefly a politician who refers to himself as Sir Justin LaNasa*), Stephen Dinehart (co-creator of Giantlands with James Ward), and -- later -- Michael K. Hovermale, TSR3's PR officer.

Also linked to TSR3 is the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Much of TSR3’s commercial business appears to be conducted via the museum.

  • Late June 2021. TSR3 embarks on an astonishing social media campaign where they tell people who don't like Gary Gygax not to play D&D, call a trans person on Twitter 'disgusting', thank the 'woke' because sales are up, insult Luke Gygax, and more. They also block or insult those who question them on Twitter.
  • Late June 2021. Various companies distance themselves from TSR3, including Gen Con, TSR2 (who rebrand themselves Solarian Games), GAMA, and various individuals such as Luke Gygax, Tim Kask, Jeff Dee, and more. TSR3 responds to being banned from Gen Con by claiming that they created the convention.

  • June 30th 2021. TSR3 blames the widespread pushback it is getting on WotC, accusing it of mounting a coordinated assault on them. In the same tweets they claim that they created the TTRPG business. Ernie Gygax and Stephen Dinehart then deactivate their Twitter accounts. Months later it transpires that this is the date they received a C&D from WotC regarding their use of their IP.

  • January 8th 2020. Wonderfiled[sic]'s Stephen Dinehart threatens to sue Twitter user David Flor for his negative review of Giantlands on the platform.
  • January 10th 2022. TSR3's Justin LaNasa sends TSR alumn Tim Kask a profane message, telling him to "Go suck Lukes/wotc/balls you f*****g coward" and accusing him of having been fired from TSR for stealing.
  • January 11th 2022. Michael K Hovermale claims that the first edition of TSR3's Star Frontiers: New Genesis game was released and has sold out. He says “It was a very small limited run released and sold on the DHSM [Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum] website. It is no longer available, and probably won’t be reprinted.” As yet, nobody has publicly revealed that they bought a copy.
  • January 14th 2022. Michael K. Hovermale resigns as TSR3's Chief Creative Officer and Public Relations Officer after 6 months in the position.
  • March 4th 2022. WotC strikes back with a lawsuit naming TSR, Justin LaNasa personally, and the Dungeon Hobby Shop museum. WotC seeks a judgement that TSR hand over all domains, take down all websites, pay treble damages and costs, hand over all stock and proceeds related to the trademarks, and more. TSR has 21 days to respond.

  • March 22nd 2022. TSR gets an extension on that WoTC suit. Two waivers of service of summons granted to both Justin LaNasa and the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum. He now has 60 days from March 4th to serve an answer or motion, or suffer default judgment.
  • March 26th 2022. TSR CON takes place at the same time as Gary Con. TSR claims " lol, actually we asked just about every one of the 800 people stopping by, TSR CON, and about 60% had no idea Gary con was going on, and we tried pushing them to go over and attend."
  • March 28th 2022. TSR3 posts images of 'rebound' copies of AD&D 1E books it is selling for $650 each.
  • May 17th 2022. Evidence emerges of Nazi connections via TSR3's Dave Johnson. Public Twitter posts include concentrated hateful imagery and messages over a long period of time.
  • May 17th 2022. DriveThruRPG removes all Dave Johnson Games titles from the platform.
  • May 17th 2022. A jury trial date is set for the TSR/WotC lawsuit for October 2023 (few suits like this actually make it to trial in the end).

  • July 19th 2022. A leaked version of a beta version of TSR's 'Star Frontiers: New Genesis' game emerges on the internet. The content includes racist and white-supremacist propaganda, including character races with ability caps based on ethnicity, and various homophobic and transphobic references. Justin LaNasa immediately threatened to sue blogger Eric Tenkar, who shared the information publicly ('Mario Real' is one of LaNasa's online pseudonyms). Various evidence points towards the document's genuine nature, including an accidentally revealed Google drive belonging to NuTSR.
  • July 22nd 2022. A video shows a Google Drive that appears to be owned by nuTSR, which contains a list of enemies of the company, usually with the word "WOKE" in caps being used as a pejorative.

  • August 30th 2022. Wizard Tower Games announces that they have received a subpeona from WotC regarding TSR and Justin LaNasa. Former NuTSR employee Michaal K Hovermale confirms that he has also received a subpeona.
  • September 5th 2022. Justin LaNasa sends out customer data, including addresses and credit card numbers. LaNasa responds by publicly claiming the evidence is photoshopped and slandering those who revealed it as liars.
  • September 8th 2022. WoTC files an injunction to prevent LaNasa or his companies from “publishing, distributing, or otherwise making available Star Frontiers New Genesis or any iteration of the game using the Marks”.
  • June 8th 2023. NuTSR files for bankruptcy. The case between WotC and NuTSR is postponed until March 2024.

Have I missed anything important? I'll continue updating this as I remember things, or as people remind me of things!

To the best of my knowledge, TSR3 is not actually selling any type of gaming product.

*if anybody has any link to LaNasa's knighthood, please let me know!

Websites
Various websites have come and gone. I'll try to make some sense of it here so you know what site you're actually visiting!
  • TSR.com is the original TSR website. For a long time it redirected to WotC. The URL is no longer in use. (WotC)
  • TSRgames.com was TSR2 until summer 2021. The site is still running, although TSR2 is now called Solarian Games. (Jayson Elliot)
  • TSR.games was TSR3 until summer 2021. It now goes to Wonderfiled(sic)'s website. (Stephen Dinehart)
  • TSR-hobbies.com is TSR 3.5, launched summer 2021 by Justin LaNasa and Ernie Gygax. (Justin LaNasa)

The trans community is not a monolith and no one member speaks for all of them.
Of course. I wouldn't argue otherwise. Only that I'm not, so I'm listening to those whom I know pretty well who are.
Personally, I'm not "waiting" for anything. I simply don't have anything of value to add about Ernie. Prior to the notice about his passing, the last time I posted news about him in this thread was over a month ago. That's not because I was trying to be respectful or proper or open about him, it's simply that there really hasn't been anything new to discuss.

This thread has always been about NuTSR, and news and information related to NuTSR. Obviously, this includes the major NuTSR players including Ernie Gygax, Justin Lanasa, Dave Johnson, etc. And like any thread, the focus can deviate over time. But it's purpose definitely isn't just to be a safe space to bash people, regardless of whether they deserve it or not. And if you have something to say about Ernie that's not NuTSR related like a review of Marmoreal Tomb, a compilation of interviews, or just something else to discuss, make a thread about it.

This is worded better than I, and gets to how I feel, I think.

How long do we need to wait for a family to mourn before we can engage in open and proper discussion of their legacy? I just think we should be clear on what the expectation/rule is.
Since a google search didn't come up with a Miss Manner's approved answer, here's my take:

If you're talking to them directly, don't, unless they start it.

On this particular forum? A week or two. You could probably go to reddit and start a thread on the topic right now, if you feel like it.

But before you decide to, ask yourself if it really serves any useful purpose. I mean, this thread is over 1,100 pages long. I'm pretty sure that everything that can be said about Ernie's choices, decisions, and morality has already been said multiple times. If you post He sux!, does it actually convey any information that we don't already know?

Wait until you hear someone talking about his wondrous legacy, then you can "um, actually" them. Except I'm pretty sure he didn't leave one.

I’m not sure what this is for. I think it’s normal for people to put more weight into the thoughts and feedback of friends, family, and other people they are close to. I know Pauli a lot better than I do most people on this forum and really respect her. So is it unusual for me to listen to her perspective? Are you saying I should ignore her and instead listen to strangers?

Her identity as a member of the trans community is incidental. That’s what it’s for.

Not in the context of the gaming community. She’s got a pretty respectable resume of official DnD and other novels dating back to the 90s. She’s a huge public advocate for trans rights and very outspoken about it. Her contributions to DnD are things Ernie wished he had. I wouldn’t call her incidental any more than I’d call Janell incidental.

Would you like to know why she posted what she did?

I think my point is clear.

I do not celebrate the passing of Ernie Gary Gygax Jr. It is the inevitable outcome of all things that they end. I will also not mourn the man, because I did not know him so well as to be pained by his passing. But to his friends and his family, who did know him, who do mourn him, who feel one of the deepest pains any can know... I say this:

Grief doesn't fade. It doesn't shrink. It doesn't disappear over time as memories fade or new people come into your life. You grow your life around that grief, that pain, until who you are, who you become, is enough to make it not -everything- in you, anymore.

I hope your growth comes swiftly. I hope your life expands around that pain. And when someone, inevitably, says something that prods your grief by reminding you of his absence, whether through ignorance or coincidence, I hope that there is enough of you to soften the pang that rises.

The issue is twofold:

1) You pulled out the "I have a [Insert Minority Group Here] friend who..." canard.
2) You used her words as a trans woman to speak over other trans people.

As a Cis Man, which you specified, you used a trans woman as a rhetorical cudgel. That's not cool.

That certainly wasn't my intent, and I sincerely apologize that it came across that way. I was only trying to say "I'm not part of this group, here is someone who I know, respect, and consider a friend's take on it."

It appears I worded that poorly, and for anyone who feels I used that as a tool to make them not feel heard, I apologize.

As I am but a humble visitor here I will spare you my opinions on the community elements, aside to point out that among the many other sins the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum engaged in was looking for was to deliberately and publicly deadname Janelle shortly after her passing. Later Ernie would invite the owner/operator to his wedding. Ernie's dead, he can never read anything anyone says about him ever again, nor can he ever change who he was. His family, including Donna, are pretty sure to know to avoid this topic. People who were hurt by him aren't "being righteous", they're also coping with the realization that he's gone and now they'll never hear him express regret for what he did, etc. I personally think they need some grace and empathy too - particularly since many of them live their life under constant attack and so frequently denied their authentic voice due to the world we live in.

I truly feel for the Gygax family, it has to suck to have people wanting to drag you into conversations about the worst things that your father and your late elder brother did, especially when you're trying to latch onto the memories and find people who have memories of them to share. I'm glad that everything which was marked with the "stamp of approval" from him is off the market forever. But trying to make it a race for respectability while the other side weaponizes it isn't neutral or classy, it's just helping reactionaries, who absolutely are trying to exploit this.

He loved & laughed heartily, sharing his radiance with anyone and everyone freely.
Here's an example - Michael wanting to use this make it about him being the better guy who was super good friend with Ernie, like he hasn't been continuing nuTSR's mission (or is it ursurp the mission by rebrand?) by cozying up to people like Grummz (of GamerGate and GamerGate 2 infamy).

I don't know Donna or any of the Gygax's personally, I can't see into their hearts - but I don't think this is the sort of character reference they want for Ernie. Maybe you should sit this one out and take advantage of the fact that unlike Ernie, you still have time to change who you are and what your legacy will be. Maybe you can spare who you leave behind the awkwardness and hearbreak.

It has worked before to have him make comments. Remember when he posted about buying WotC?
He posted that in response to two right-wing reactionary figures who are infamous for generating Ian Miles Cheong (stillgray), a guy who used to be a video game journalist but now positions himself (a Malayasian man, mostly living in Malayasia) as an expert on what the soul of America needs to restore itself to its constitutional values - and a disgraced video game developer who is being heavily criticized by his own fanbase for being too reactionary and too invested in the culture wars: Mark Kern (Grummz). Both of whom Elon follows. Elon did not follow nuTSR nor did he show any signs he knows it exists.

1740991606765.png

So now you know why Michael wants to be Mark's friend, that and Mark seems to be way better at this milking people for money thing than Justin ever was.

During the fiasco while the Hobby Shop Museum was up, it did tweet at him a few times hoping to get Elon's attention and then once (hilariously) to abuse him when Elon mentioned he'd gotten vaccinated because "I thought you were smart!" I don't have the screenshot for that one on hand, but I did find this one (yes he did post at Elon multiple times with the account privated, meaning Elon didn't have any chance to see the posts... not that it would have mattered given the like, 44,800+ replies):

1740990644548.png

As a side note, and to give credit where it's due - Stephen Dinehart, aka Wonderfilled aka GiantLands guy aka Guy who started this mess with the transphobic insult, did post some rather nice tributes to Ernie. Nothing amazing, but at least he's had the good grace to not try to turn Ernie's corpse into a bludgeon to fight the culture wars with.

1740992525657.png

I'm hoping he can just quit here and not do like he did with Jim Ward and try to make it all about him and his (all but forgotten) game.

(If you're curious what Dave Johnson had to say... nothing really, he did 1 retweet and then went straight back to raging about right-wing politics with his "no politics" account, The Evil DM also managed a reasonable but unremarkable "prayers with the family" post with no further comments.)
