D&D (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

They did do a dragon rider subclass a couple of years ago, closer to peak Wing, but they didn’t get that it needed to be associated with a military organisation for the true Top Gun with dragons effect.
The Drakewatden is pretty solid, but the Ranger lacks the same power budget for the Subclass features that the Fighter gets. Also, that was more of a hot-off-the-presses Eragon style dragon rider, not as Fourth Wing-ish with quirky powers like the new Purple Dragon Knight.

Oh no! WotC made something in the Forgotten Realms cooler than it used to be! Quick, everyone needs to yell at them until they stop!
This is exactly how I feel.

The old Purple Dragon Knights were a mid idea. Not bad, not good, just mid. I'm sure they had their fans, but it was pretty much just purple knights. Ok.

Now they get sick amethyst dragons and a sense of purpose and agency in the world and sick purple dragons. But apparently having a sick purple dragon is actually the stupidest thing ever, because their old mid lore is more important due to the length of its existence.

Oh? Do we actually know anything about what they're doing with Cormyr or the Purple Dragon Knights beyond this subclass that has very little lore attached to it? Have they done any videos on the subject? Because, if not, I'm just thinking it's a little soon to determine what's going one way or another without more information.
Since when has a complete lack of information stopped fans for definitively declaring the “truth”?

Edited to be less trite:
If story doesn't matter then there is no barrier to just changing everything. Elves can be elementals, dwarves can be aquatic blue and beardless, halflings can be 7' tall, and Elminster can be a barbarian.

If you're going to add something that has no precident you can just add something. The only reason to retcon is if the previous version was a serious problem.

Or a change for new aesthetics.

I think some of the monster type changes are very interesting. I think the Purple Dragon changes are interesting. Not all ideas made in the past were great ideas, and its ok to work on, refine, and change ideas over the passage of time.

It's not a refinement, is the thing. It's Elminster is a Barbarian. A similar change would be if they all turned into grape-flavored half-dragons.

This is a Super Mario live action movie of a change.

No no no. Again you’re doing it wrong. All new ideas are bad. We must carve all things in stone so that we can bludgeon anyone who disagrees with us about the head and shoulders with our stone tablets.
