Anyone who loves AD&D and who really loves crunchy rules, Hackmaster is on Bundle of Holding on deep discount!

This game gets so much right... where to start? Maybe that anytime I see a post in the vein of, "I like D&D, but I don't like...", I almost always think to myself, "Hackmaster fixes that". Double dice for damage for a better average, high damage causing Threshold of Pain (ToP) checks that can drop opponents instantly (thus making big weapons and good CON stats important), the best initiative system ever devised, robust skill system... I can go on and on.

Which is probably why it's not as popular as its OSR contemporaries. With all that perfection comes a little bit of investment on the GM side. There is a lot going on. And although almost all of it is crunched before hand so play moves pretty quickly, I understand not everyone is as excited about reading the particulars of treating arrow wounds or doing the algebra necessary to calculate those ToPs mentioned above.

Even if it never sees play though, I highly recommend checking it out. I'm certain there will be at least a few rules you'll end up borrowing for your other games.

Which version of Hackmaster is it?

Edit: nevermind. Is see it's the more recent one that wasn't produced under a license agreement with WotC. Still a good game, but less fun.

Sorry, was away from the computer.

My Hackmaster 4E books are some of my most prized possessions. I absolutely adore everything about them. The fact they have an entire book that's just tables upon tables of monster info blows my mind. The "XP to HackFactor" ratio that's calculated for every monster (1600+!!!) is Munchkin gold.

Also, the GM screen:

Just wow... truly a work of art.

That said, you don't think 5E is a better game!? I thought it was much more thought out and playable then 4E.

I do think it's a better game, design-wise. I said, however, that 4e was more fun, and I stand by that. It was closer to 1e AD&D (my first gaming love), and therefore closer to KoDT, and reading KoDT strips in Dragon is what got me interested in KenzerCo in the first place.

The Hacklopedia of Beasts is something I've always wanted in print.
They really do put out some nice books, just expensive.

Ebay has a few copies for around $100. Seems like too much, but I paid around $80 for mine 10 years ago, so not wildly overpriced.

That's one of the reasons I was excited about this BoH: HackMaster's major barrier of entry is definitely price, so hoping this gets a few more eyes on these amazing products.

Hoody-Hoo!

Are you still reading them? I'm still getting used to the new format...
