Current LLM's are just talking with yourself. They say what you want them to say based on the idea that the most likely thing to say is what the person wants to hear. That's why it initially chose which editions it liked based on what it thought you would like because it's what most people like, and then when it found you had differing opinions it adopted them.
However, what is cool about the current LLM is that despite having no concept of self and no ability to have a mental theory about more than one person at a time, they are beginning to show remarkable ability to integrate their past conversations into their present as a form of memory. The fact that you aren't dealing with a blank slate every 3 lines or even every 11,000 characters is pretty amazing.
