D&D 5E Campaign Finale!

Hello!

I'm announcing this here because most of the people in my life don't really get the significance of this...

My weekly 5E campaign has finally wrapped up!

We started in November, 2014 and played three hours every week. It took the characters from level 1-20.

Here's the write up of the finale: https://ur-delth.obsidianportal.com/adventure-log/the-fall-of-omet-arzuk

Probably the most creatively fulfilling thing I've ever done.

~550 sessions for 20 levels? You took it slow ... nothing wrong with it ... but that is surprising. I've been going 1 to 20 in 2 to 3 years for weekly games.
We did go slow. But we also had a second group of characters that had concurrent, intertwining story arcs. We would switch between the arcs based on the story beats. I would usually leave them hanging and then switch because I'm evil like that.

About a year into the campaign, a player pitched the idea and it seemed fun to me. But I told them that only one of their characters would make it to the end of the campaign. As both sets of characters gained levels and the stories began to converge, I let them choose which character they would like to finish quest and then I worked out a way for the other characters to leave the story. The second set of characters made it to level 19.

Congratulations

Quick questions

How many charachter deaths?

How many total players?

How did you track XP?
As mentioned in a previous response, there were actually two concurrent, intertwining groups of characters. Only one group made it to the end.

So, for the arc that made it to the end:
Character deaths: 7 confirmed deaths, 1 presumed death, 2 unknown, 2 found different paths in life, 3 characters made it to the end

For the other arc: 5 confirmed deaths, 2 presumed deaths, 1 found a different path in life, 3 characters made it to the final session of the arc

All my players ended up playing at least a little in both groups for a total of 10 players.

2 players were with me for the whole campaign. The other player that made it to the end was part of the group for the majority of the time, but took a break in the middle for personal reasons and returned to play several years until the end.

At the beginning I tracked XP per the rules. But after level 7 or 8 I began to level them up based on story beats.

10 years is an impressive time! I actually finished a campaign of my own a few years ago. I was 17 months of bi-weekly play at 4 sessions. So, about 136 total hours. They got to level 13. I designed that campaign to kind of wrap up around 12th level. In the end, they kept basically going everywhere except where they needed to, because they were avoiding the final confrontation. I had to give them a nuclear option to finally convince them they could finish it. There was room to continue on, but I wasn't sure it would be quite as gratifying.

Still, it was the first campaign I ever ran to completion. Like I said, I specifically designed it to end at 12, because that seemed a lot more achievable. I've never had a campaign go to 20. I'd love o do that, though.

I'm actually going to run that campaign again with a new set of players, and I'll more strongly entertain the idea of extending it past 12 if they want to. This new one starts on Sunday, and it'll be bi-weekly with 10 hour sessions. Yes, I have no life, and playing D&D is how I wish to fill my days.
